Which Dumont Nitro Should You Buy? A Guide to the Nitro Fragrance Line

There is no single best Dumont Nitro fragrance, and the names will not help you find the right one. The Nitro line in PerfumeBox's Dumont range mixes colors and metals with labels like Pour Homme, Intense, Elixir and Intensely. None of those words tells you much about how a fragrance actually smells.

This guide sorts the line by published notes, concentration and use case, so you can find one or two that suit you.

The quick answer: No single Dumont Nitro is best for everyone. The range broadly splits into Eau de Parfum and Extrait de Parfum options, with very different scent directions and price points. The Eau de Parfum Nitros covered here are $31.95 to $32.50, and the Extraits are $44.99. Choose by scent direction first, then by concentration. If you have never worn a Nitro, the eight-piece coffret is the lowest-risk place to start.

Understanding the Dumont Nitro line

The line has two tiers, and PerfumeBox labels them clearly even where the names do not.

The Eau de Parfum tier in this guide covers Red, White, Pour Homme, Green, Blue, Platinum, Black and Intense. Each costs $31.95 to $32.50 for 3.4 oz, and each lists 6 to 8 hours on most skin types.

The Extrait de Parfum tier covers Gold, Elixir, Red Intensely and White Intensely, each at $44.99. Extrait is generally the more concentrated format. Most also list longer wear: 8 to 10 hours for Gold, 10 to 12 for Elixir and Red Intensely. No figure is published for White Intensely.

That is a pattern in these listings, not a rule for every fragrance. Composition, skin and weather matter too.

The names are where most buyers go wrong:

• "Intense" and "Intensely" mean different things here. Nitro Intense is an Eau de Parfum. Red Intensely and White Intensely are Extraits.
• A shared name does not guarantee shared notes. Nitro White Intensely has almost nothing in common with Nitro White.
• The closest relatives do not share a name. Nitro Intense repeats Nitro Black's entire published heart and base.

The Eau de Parfum Nitros

These sit in a tight price range but cover very different scent profiles. On the published notes, they fall into two broad groups.

The brighter, more aromatic Eau de Parfum Nitros

Nitro Red ($32.50). A fresh oriental: lavender up top, then watermelon, cedarwood and calamus over sandalwood, amber and patchouli. It is the natural first bottle in the line.

Nitro White ($32.50). Herbal and resinous rather than sweet: cypress, iris and juniper berries over patchouli and myrrh. Musk, amber, honey, vanilla and leather sit underneath. With nothing sweet in the opening, it is an easy office choice.

Nitro Pour Homme ($32.50). The opening is almost all grapefruit, mandarin and cardamom. Rose, orange blossom and jasmine follow, over cedarwood, guaiac wood, tonka, musk and sandalwood. PerfumeBox positions it for office and formal wear.

Nitro Green ($32.50). Nitro Green is not especially green. Saffron, jasmine and vanilla open over a fougère accord, then lavender, amber and cedarwood. It dries down to violet, fir resin and an earthy accord. On paper it is warm and aromatic, which suits cooler weather more than the color suggests.

Nitro Blue ($32.50). It works in two stages. Sage, basil, lemon, cinnamon and orange blossom open it herbal and spiced. Then praline, tolu balsam and black cardamom pull it sweeter, over black amber, patchouli and Brazilian rosewood.

The sweeter, fruit-spiced Eau de Parfum Nitros

Nitro Black ($31.95). Apple, black currant, bergamot and pineapple up top. The heart turns darker with patchouli, birch, pepper, lavender, rose and jasmine. Amber, musk and vanilla close it out.

Nitro Intense ($32.50). Its published structure is built on Nitro Black's. It repeats Black's entire heart and base, and three of Black's four top notes. It then adds cognac, cinnamon and plum, myrrh, tonka and sandalwood. On paper, that makes it a boozier, spicier Black. Intense is also one of the eight minis in the coffret.

Nitro Platinum ($31.95). A busy, fruit-spiced opening of bergamot, apple, blackcurrant, orange, pink pepper and cardamom. The sweetness sits in the heart: candy sugar, saffron, vanilla and lily of the valley. Cedarwood, guaiac wood, moss and musk keep the base dry. It shares the lowest bottle price in this guide with Nitro Black.

The Extrait de Parfum Nitros

These share one price point, but they are not variations on a single idea. Gold and Red Intensely lean bright, while Elixir and White Intensely lean sweet.

Nitro Gold. Bright for an Extrait. Pink pepper, grapefruit, tangerine, apple and pineapple open over cognac, vetiver, cedarwood, marine notes and salt. The base is amberwood, sandalwood, vanilla, toffee and musk. The citrus and marine notes make it a good Extrait for warm days. PerfumeBox lists Nitro Gold at 8 to 10 hours on most skin types.

Nitro Red Intensely. Also on the brighter side. Bergamot, peach and apple open over cedar, lily of the valley and sea salt. The base is sandalwood, patchouli, amber and moss. That base is shared with Nitro Red, so it reads as a relative of the original. Published longevity is 10 to 12 hours on most skin types.

Nitro Elixir. Bergamot, apple, orange and cardamom open into geranium, mint, orange blossom and praline. Ambergris, tonka, dry amber and moss sit underneath. Nitro Elixir lists 10 to 12 hours on most skin types. Nitro Platinum's published opening contains all four of Elixir's top notes. The two part ways in the heart, so treat it as a resemblance, not a substitute.

Nitro White Intensely. On paper, the sweetest Extrait in this guide. Dark rum, apple, saffron, pineapple and cardamom lead into caramel, nutmeg, cloves, cashmere wood and guaiac wood. Vanilla woods, sandalwood, moss and dry amber form the base. PerfumeBox does not publish a longevity figure for it. • Lowest-priced full bottle: Nitro Platinum or Nitro Black, both $31.95 for 3.4 oz.
• Something fresher: Nitro Red, Nitro Pour Homme or Nitro White. In the Extrait tier, Nitro Gold or Nitro Red Intensely.
• Something sweeter: Nitro Platinum or Nitro Black. In the Extrait tier, Nitro White Intensely or Nitro Elixir.
• For work: Nitro Pour Homme or Nitro White.
• For evenings: Nitro Intense, Nitro Elixir or Nitro White Intensely.

The best way to try several Dumont Nitros first

If you have not settled on a Nitro, a full bottle is a $31.95 to $44.99 guess. The Dumont Nitro 8 Piece Coffret Set costs $36.50 for eight 10ml bottles. It holds Nitro Black, Pour Homme, Green, Intense, Red, Platinum, White and Blue.

The set focuses on the Eau de Parfum side of the range, at about $4.56 per fragrance. PerfumeBox sells it as a coffret rather than a discovery set, but it does the same job.

Know the trade-offs:

• It skips the Extraits. Gold, Elixir, Red Intensely and White Intensely are not included.
• It costs more per milliliter than a full bottle. Eighty milliliters for $36.50 works out higher than 100ml at $31.95 to $32.50. What it saves you is a wrong guess.
